10.1 General
Note that these preferences will alter per independent mode modem. Some
modems offer more features than others.
- Enable Self Mode on exit - this option will turn on 'independent
mode' on your modem, on exit. This will enable your modem to answer incoming
telephone calls, like an answermachine.
- Energy Saving (Pace Solo only) - turn on 'energy saving' when exiting
STFax. However, we do not recommend this for these reasons:
- Energy saving puts your modem into a deep sleep. Therefore it takes longer
to answer the phone. If you have your modem set to '2 rings before answer' you
might find the modem takes five rings before it answers the phone.
- The modem will almost certainly miss the UK Caller ID, sent before the first
ring. Why? As the modem is in a deep sleep, and the first ring brings it out of
this sleep and, as UK Caller ID is sent before the first ring, the modem will
almost certainly not 'see' nor store this.
- Energy saving mode hardly uses any less electricity than the normal mode,
this isn't a television! As with all answermachines, they are left 'on' as
default. Energy saving is totally overkill.
- Call Monitor - allows you to overhear the person leaving a message on
your modem. Say you are in the bath, not wanting to be disturbed, a call comes
in, person starts to leave a message (which you can overhear) and, only if it is
a really important person, you can choose to intervene.
- Don't delete - an option to store the messages on the modem, so that
STFax doesn't delete them from memory when it downloads the messages to your
computer. The only downside here is that if you run STFax again, the messages
will be downloaded to your computer, again.
- Password - this is the numerical password that is required by your modem
for remote access. The Pace Solo, for example, allows you to remotely access the
modem and listen to your messages. If you have entered a password, this is the
password you will be required to enter on the remote telephone keypad. ie.
'1234', for example.
- Upload Greeting - you can upload the system greeting to your modem. This
is the greeting the incoming caller will hear when your modem answers the
telephone.
- Play - play back the system greeting message.
- Volume - the volume control for your modem.
